DO GOOD

Ana Montoya
Fashion trends are cyclical. Most come and go, and only the strongest survive long enough to become a classic. One emerging trend that we hope is here to stay is sustainable eyewear. More and more sunglass companies are producing eco-friendly frames, many of which come in recyclable packaging, and some manufacturers even merchandise their products at the retail level using P-O-P displays made of renewable materials, too.

Regardless of which renewable source these eco-friendly frames are made of (castor oil or various forms of wood, etc.), one thing remains clear: going green helps everyone. Environmental responsibility lies at the heart of these products, and while some may argue that they may cost more to produce, it’s just the right thing to do for our future.

Some sunglass companies go even further than this... Another trend we hope isn’t a fad is the commitment to one-for-one programs, where either a pair of frames or a sight-saving surgery is given to someone in need for every pair of sunglasses sold. What a truly altruistic concept! This business model, which started with TOMS shoes, is widely spreading throughout the eyewear industry, and in the capitalist world we live in, it’s certainly a commendable one to follow.

It’s good to see that business is evolving from a purely consumerist standpoint to a less materialistic and more giving one—one that cares about the future. Do your part in helping to spread this good to others by stocking eco-friendly sunglasses and those that partake in one-for-one programs. Make sure you convey their story to your customers, and you’ll surely see a rising interest in these special products. After all, if you can look good, feel good, and help others… who can really say no to that?
